Professional Development at the January 2016 eLCC

The eLearning Consortium of Colorado (eLCC) January 2016 meeting was held this past Friday in the Regis Mountain View Room. Gorgeous and unseasonably high temps greeted attendees. The professional development sessions started off the morning activities and featured winners from the Teaching and Learning with Technology Micro-grant (TLTM) 2015-16 round of funding. The TLTM is a competitive program for the funding of small-scale faculty initiatives that use learning technologies to enhance student learning.

First up was Dr. Nick Kallan with the Regis College Department of Chemistry. Nick talked about his use of Wacom Intuos Bamboo Stylus and Camtasia software to support student-created Khan Academy-style video tutorials. The videos will be used by future chemistry students to better understand chemistry topics.

Kent Jones next presented on a technology-enhanced Clinical Practice Lab for children 2-5 years of age who have an autism diagnosis. The project was funded from a proposal submitted by Dr. Laurie Sperry, Contemporary Liberal Studies, Department of Education. Dr. Sperry purchased an iPad and special software, including Prologue2Go and Mayer Johnson software to create a lab environment that gave students a greater awareness for Autism Spectrum Disorders and make them better prepared for a teaching and/or service environment. Kent concluded his talk with a demonstration of an app for creating sentences using a series of images.

Dr. Melissa Brydon then presented on interactive, synchronous learning in online education courses. Melissa's group project used Zoom Pro to create a user-friendly, collaborative meeting space for her online students.

More information and testimonials from TLTM award winners are available on the ID&T Teaching and Learning with Technology Micro-grant website.
